The Little Notes Left Behind |Letters to My Kids 2021

A long time ago

Dear Kids, life consists of finding treasures. I was arranging some shelves to leave more room for the new books I bought. I opened up a Bible and there was a note. I realized how important it is to go back to writing notes instead of electronic notes via my planner and cell phone.
Lo and behold, when I looked, I noticed the date. This made me look at the front of the Bible. It was a #GideonsBible. I am eternally grateful to the brothers of Gideons International for placing Bibles in hotels here in America.
You see, when I was in my 20s, I traveled all over the country for work. Some people will take advantage of the trip to celebrate in the hotel bars. I couldn’t, because I come from a family of alcoholics. Others would feel comfortable dating women. I did not, because I have seen the devastating impact of adultery on families.

One night stands are never one night for the families that are affected by them!

I would usually get lost a few times a day when visiting cities and clients for the first time. After a long day and week of this, all I wanted to do, was walk around the city I was in, and then grab something to eat in my hotel room. This usually meant that I had some time to read. Since the Bibles were there, I would grab one as a souvenir. Wherever I went, I found Gideon’s Bibles in the little drawer by my bed.
I never thought much about taking them with me, since they were free. But later in life, I gave most of the Bibles away to people who needed one.

All this to say, in 1988, as you see in the note, my wife was 2 months pregnant with our first child. I didn’t realize this as I was writing my notes down. But the Lord had a plan for my life. Through the journey He was setting me to run, there were roadblocks, detours, slippery slopes, and dangerous curves!
I was being refined. I would like to be able to say I have had a perfect spiritual life all these years. But I would be a horrible liar. One thing I did, I didn’t give up. I’m too competitive to do that. God makes me and our relationship better all the time. The older I get, the only thing I would tell those who are grappling with life and their personal relationship with God:

Don’t give up. This relationship & its journey are not to the swift, or the people who look like they have it made in their lives.

Most of the time, when you see people all holy in churches or communities, those same people project themselves to be something they’re not. Trust me. Don’t look at them… fix your gaze upon the One who gives you the power to run the race, and refresh you. Not the people that may look like their lives are what you want to achieve. Achieve the ultimate price, finish the race, and in-between your running this long distance journey, through your stumbling, and scrapings of life, remember to always get up, dust yourself up, and continue reaching for the LORD. He’s the one that’ll make you finish your journey. Don’t worry about what others may look like while they are running along side and passing you by. Let them. Because what counts is the little notes you wrote along the way. Each of these notes tells the story of where you were, are, and will be. Concentrate on God’s Word, and your personal journey with Him. The rest will all make sense years from now… as long as you don’t quit…

…May your journey be a bunch of personal notes written to yourself, with the Teacher’s healing touch and love for you. Keep running the race that is set before you...

Oh, and by the way, keep a journal. You will find that the words you write in situations, good or bad, will bring you a smile going forward. Because, those situations where you recorded your thoughts, were the moments when Jesus taught and directed you. Sometimes the same situations, perhaps make no sense. But to God, He was giving you His life giving wisdom and guidance…

Enjoy the journey, & don’t forget to breathe it all in…
