First and foremost, this post is different than my usual posts. But I feel very strongly about the subject. Times are changing and the future looks unnerving for those that are led by Christ.
Jesus tells us to make disciples of all nations… but how can we if we are here? Some of us will go to the ends of the earth. Some of us will never go beyond 50 miles of our homes. Yet, Jesus tells us to disciple others.
This is where ministries like CLI come in.
Below you will find a letter I wrote to Henry Reyenga Jr. President of CLI (Christian Leaders Institute).
The reason for this letter was to encourage him to continue the calling of equipping the saints for ministry.
Some people believe it is wrong for a Bible College to ask for money from the people getting the blessings of instruction. I maintain that if you are being instructed and are learning from these types of schools, it is imperative to give something. Specifically if the school does not require money for the fundamental classes.
CLI is a non-profit Bible College that gives free classes to those that can’t afford it. It has a worldwide student base in areas that are now too dangerous for outside missionaries to get to. This is where the work of equipping and training those native to each country comes in.
CLI’s Christian Basics class is a very solid training class for those that want to get a deeper understanding of their faith. These basics are a catapult to the rest of the courses that are rich with information.
This is the letter that I was led to send the President of CLI.
Please forgive my informality. Let me introduce myself, my name is Oscar Roca. I believe and know that CLI was placed in my life at the very best and most opportune time. I feel like I know all of you. I am a student of CLI and absolutely love that this training is free. May the Lord bless and keep CLI going and give you 100 times more than what you ask for.
I write because I want to encourage you to keep asking for donations. The time is short and the way things are going in our country (America) there may come a time where you and I will not be able to preach the word without any severe consequences.
First and foremost, we are to equip the saints for ministry Ephesians. 4:12, and this is what CLI is doing on a massive scale. There could not be that many students going through the CLI Christian Basics programs, along with the Pastoral training and College credit courses without funding from love offerings. I say love offerings because your work is a labor of love.
Now let me go back to what I wrote earlier. I have been in ministry for a little under 3 decades. I have seen the worst of ministry and the best. Some of the bad things I have seen were from full-time staff that did not have a clue about ministry. Nor were they personally trained in basics like counseling people, leadership training or Memorial services.
I have gone to Bible College before and have paid a lot more for 1 class than 3-4 classes here at CLI.
I believe in what your mission is and I back you up 100%. For me to say this is very rare. I had cancer about 4 years ago and had to leave full-time ministry. Through the tough period, I found myself questioning. Not my faith but the way I see things run in modern churches. I was searching for online Bible classes one day and I have no idea about how I came across your website. Let alone, signed up for CLI classes! But I did. Here are the reasons why:
1. They were free and all you ask for is to give voluntarily. This to me showed your true heart and the heart of the other teachers teaching and being part of CLI.
This is the heart of what Jesus wants from us.
2. I was impressed because Jesus tells us in Matthew 10:8 – Freely you have received; freely give! This was such a breath of fresh air to me.
3. Now that I am taking some degree classes, I find them not only refreshing (again with this word) but enlightening. CLI is not only equipping the saints thru the basics but also getting the Saints ready for battle. Yes, I said battle. Because the future will be a bigger and more fierce spiritual battle. And I believe that you are doing what Paul told Timothy in 2Tim 4:2 NKJV “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.”
4. I believe that the best way to make disciples is the home based faith fellowships. This is where personal training is best used.
Lastly, I want to thank you. Not just a hearty thank you but an eternal thank you. What you are doing is over and above the call of Christian duty. And this is where I know you will agree with me. What you and the rest of the staff at CLI are doing, is what our Lord and Savior told us to do but the modern church, for the most part, has forgotten about. And that is to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19).
This last part is why it is so important for those that can give freely to give and for those that can’t, to be blessed by those that can. Those that can’t, I would ask for all of us to pray in one accord for the continued equipping of the saints thought the entire corners of the globe.
I will keep running the race that is set before me,
