Behold, a virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.—Matthew 1:23
Mary of the Tribe of Judah from the ancestral town of Bethlehem must have been a young teen girl. Most likely around 12-15 years of age.
—Imagine a modern day teen girl so devoted to God that she is picked to deliver God Himself!
—Now imagine an Angel of the LORD visiting your teen daughter, giving her the news that God has picked her to be His earthly mother! I know my wife and I would have had a good laugh, had one of my daughters came up to us trying to explain the great news:
Daughter: Dad, mom… an Angel of the LORD came to me earlier while we were all sleeping!
Me thinking…. I should have checked her breath and demeanor when she came back from hanging out with her friends: Oh an Angel of the LORD, you say!?
Daughter in an excited voice: I know right!? You want to know what he said?
My wife interjecting nervously: Oh what did the Angel say?
Daughter even more excited: Yes! I can’t believe I’m going to be God’s mommy!
Both my wife & I’s minds hear a loud record scratching!
Us now more concerned and thinking things a mile a minute: Wait, what? What did you just say?!
Daughter still talking fast and excited: He told me that I was picked because I was highly favored!( Luke 1:28 )
Me nervously tapping my foot up and down like Thumper: It’s time we go visit an emergency room young lady. Go get ready!
Daughter goes from peaceful excitement to loud crying, and runs back into the room.
—I know that’s not how it played out in the Gospels, but imagine Mary having to tell her parents, Jospeh her fiance and the rest of the family and friends. This would have been hard for a teenage girl to wrap her head around, let alone be able to explain it to her loved ones. Yet, with, and through all this, Joseph accepted her because God had sent Gabriel to communicate what was happening to Mary.
There are a few things I am thankful for in this story:
1. That God would come down from heaven and become human.
2. That God would pick someone like Mary that had a passionate faith and nerves of steel that she would need the rest of her life, when people would gossip about her and her Son.
3. That God sent Joseph into Mary’s life. You see, when Mary had told him, Jospeh did not want to humiliate her, he wanted to leave her silently and without disgracing her (Matthew 1:19 ).
4. And even more impressive, Joseph went to think things through after Mary had told him that she was pregnant by the Holy Spirit of God ( Matthew 1:20 ). He would stay alongside of his wife until the day he went home to be with the LORD.
May we all have this amzing faith. One faithful in her passion for God and obedience. The other, the loving and leader-like qaulity of not reacting like 90% of the men would have.
